The project had three aims to better understand what affected each community's access to reliable testing: The REACH-OUT project started engaging with members of the Black and African American communities in the Denver Metropolitan region through interviews and surveys to better understand what barriers exist that impact access to COVID-19 testing and vaccination. “We involve the community in both design and the implementation of our study to address barriers to COVID-19 testing.” Study Aims and Methods “REACH-OUT is a community-based study,” said Matthew DeCamp from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The REACH-OUT project partnered with Colorado Community Engagement Alliance (CO-CEAL) and Trailhead Institute to reach Black and African American communities, Spanish-speaking populations, and communities in the San Luiz Valley region. They hoped to ultimately improve the COVID-19 testing rates among five underserved or socially or medically vulnerable populations in Denver, Colorado. The Research, Engagement, and Action on COVID-19 Health Outcomes via Testing (REACH-OUT) project aimed to better understand the barriers to testing as well as the factors that increase community risk of COVID-19. In Colorado, and across the United States, communities face inequitable social, ethical, and behavioral barriers to accessing reliable COVID-19 testing.
